About Mrs. B

SO happy to meet you! I'm Mrs. Burlingame (Emily). I’m originally from Findlay, Ohio, where I grew up creating and loving art. I had amazing art teachers all through school and I can distinctly remember wanting to be an art teacher when I was in high school. I graduated from Bluffton University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education and moved to Columbus after I got married and have been here for almost 10 years. I love Grove City, Columbus and the great state of Ohio.

I have worked at several children’s art camps, studios and after school programs over the years. I spent 2 years after college substitute teaching, waiting for an art position to open. With no such luck, I took a temp job with Nationwide Insurance (to pay the bills of course) and worked there for 8 years. Then, God opened the door for me to teach at Grove City Christian and I am so happy and thankful to be here.

My art teaching philosophy:
God is the greatest creator and artist of all time. His creations are all around us, through out all of nature and within us all. Since we are all created in His image (Genesis 1:27) I believe that we are each designed to create in one form or another.

I believe as children this is innate within us and somewhere down the road, we lose interest or start believing that we are 'not creative'. NOT TRUE!

I have 5 main goals for my students...
1. Be an observer.
Learn to view the world around them as God's great creation. To be an observer of the little things and to never cease to be in awe of God.
2. Build confidence.
I'll be the first to admit I don't love drawing and it's not my forte, but painting, ceramics and photography... oh yes! I want my students to have a variety of art experiences that allow them to explore and find their own 'forte'!
3. Strive for excellence.
Colossians 3:23 - WHATEVER you do, work at it with all your heart as if working for the Lord and not human masters.
4. Appreciate all art.
Create a life long appreciation and love of the arts.
5. Be relevant.
Make cultural and relevant impacts to society from a Christian worldview. Teaching to be salt and light through art. Matthew 5:13-16

I am passionate about making my life creative everyday and inspiring others (especially my students!) to do the same.

Some of my favorite mediums are photography, watercolor, mixed media, ceramics, printmaking, outfits, accessories, home decor and a good black Sharpie. (I love Sharpies!) I am inspired by color, shapes, light and nature. You will likely see this reflected in your child's art projects! I believe that Jesus Christ is the great creator and the ultimate artist. I find great beauty in His creation and His love in my life.

And if that’s not enough to keep me busy, I chase after my amazing and crazy 4 year old. I love sharing my love of art with her and watching her discover her own creativity. You can follow some of my own artsy endeavors on my personal blog too - emilybcreative.blogspot.com

Here I hope you find inspiration and knowledge to use in your own creative journey, daily living and encouragement for your own budding artist!
